When Do I Need Short Term Car Insurance?
Most people encounter short term car insurance when they are renting a car. You know, they badger you to take the extra insurance making you feel like you are taking an incredible risk if you don't take it. Seriously though, it can be really handy. Your credit card company may include renal insurance if you use there card for the rental, but if they don't it can save your butt if you get into an accident or anything happens for that matter.
Short-term car insurance can include some or all of the below:
- liability insurance
- bodily injury property
- physical damage
- uninsured and under insured motorist
- medical payments for passengers
How do I pay for it? Most companies are going to charge you a flat rate. The premium might actually be less expensive than long term insurance. So this could be good if you spend, say half the year in Dayton , Ohio and half the year in Paris, France. (It could happen.)
Some other insurance 'lingo' that may help you out:
Actual Cash Value The cost to replace property minus depreciation of the property.
Bodily Injury Liability Covers medical expenses for injuries the you cause to someone else.
Collision This covers damage to your car from any collision, be it another car, a mail box, your neighbor's dog house, garage wall, whatever.
Comprehensive Car catches fire, gets ripped off, falls off a cliff, an elephant sits on it, you are covered.
Full Coverage Tricky wording here. This means you have all the minimum coverage for your state, but it does not necessarily mean you will always be fully covered. Thanks.
No-Fault Insurance "You did it!" "No, you did!" Doesn't matter if you have this type of insurance.
Uninsured/Under insured Motorist Coverage If the bum that hits you doesn't have insurance and you get hurt, you are covered.
