There Are Many Cars With Good Gas Mileage, But Are They Right For You?

Nobody wants to pay more than they have to at the pump. Even if you need a larger vehicle, like and SUV or a Mini-Van, you still don't want to pay more than you have to. Auto manufactures are starting to pay more attention to making each and every vehicle they produce as fuel efficient as possible.

Tip: the EPA changed the way they calculate MPG ratings a couple years ago. The ratings you see on the window are much more conservative than they used to be. So now, if you drive conservative, you should be able to get better than what is listed on the window sticker.

Here is a list of vehicles that are getting good gas mileage ratings from the EPA in 2010.

The Champ: Toyota Prius 51 city/48 hwy
Right now, the Toyota Prius comes in as the car with the best gas mileage. Coming in at an EPA rating of 51 city and 48 highway miles, you won't have to fill up very often with this vehicle.

Runner Up: Honda Insight 40* city/43* hwy
Honda's newest hybrid is the most affordable hybrid on the market, with a starting price under $20,000.
*The EPA will only rate vehicles in one mode, that being whatever mode the car is in when you turn it on. The Insight has a 2nd 'ECO' mode that, when tested by Car and Driver, Road and Track, etc., gets well into the 50mpg range. It's worth a look.

Honda Civic Hybrid 40city/45Hwy
Since 2003, this version of the already fuel efficient Civic, has been up toward the top of the list.

Mini Cooper 28city/37Hwy
These little guys, based on the very popular British favorite, get great gas mileage and are a little bigger than they look.

Volkswagen Jetta and Golf Diesel  30city/41Hwy
New clean diesels that are out are not the diesels from your childhood. No more black smoke and rattling engines.

What about the Smart Car?
Two seats, 3 cylinders, and yes, 33 in the city and 41 on the highway would let the Smart be on the list.

Just for fun, which car get the WORST gas mileage?
That prize goes to the 2010 Lamborghini Murcielago. This 12cyl engine will get you 8city and 13hwy, so you better make the most of it.

Cars are going to get smaller. By 2015, all car companies have to have an average fleet rating of 30 miles to the gallon. You are going to see a lot of these cars go back to being a little bit smaller.

Like people have said, they have added weight to these cars because of all the technology and safety features. You could get a small CRX back in the day that got 50 mpg, but would die if you got in an accident.

Do I have to get a hybrid to get good gas mileage these days? it seems like all these cars have gone down in gas mileage. What is the point. I have to get a tiny car to get any kind of fuel savings

All the cars these days have a ton of safety features that are either mandated by the government or put in by the manufactures voluntarily. This makes them weigh more which makes them get worse fuel efficiency

What the heck happen to all of these cars and the gas mileage ratings? I used to have car in the 1980's that got 40 miles to the gallon? Now, all these cars get in the 30's and I have to pay twice as much?
