Car Safety Ratings

It's the one automobile feature that you may not be able to live without: safety. Safety features have come along way since Henry Ford rolled those Model T's off the assembly line at the turn of the century. Believe it or not, it took quite awhile before seat belts even made there way into cars. It was American car manufacturer Nash who was said to first offer the seat belt as an option in 1949, with Ford following pace in 1955. The first to make the belt standard equipment was Saab in 1958.

With things like VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist), Electronic Brake Distribution, Anti Lock Brakes, and Air Bags, safety is something that car manufacturers all over the globe are concerned about.

Below we have listed the safety ratings for some of the more popular full size sedans:

2010 Mazda MAZDA6

NHTSA Ratings
Passenger: 5 stars
Driver: 5 stars
Side Impact Front: 5 stars
Side Impact Rear: 5 stars
Rollover Rating: 5 stars

The Mazda6 received the highest rating in all five categories from the NHTSA. Excellent.

2010 Chevy Malibu

NHTSA Ratings
Passenger: 5 stars
Driver: 5 stars
Side Impact Front: 5 stars
Side Impact Rear: 5 stars
Rollover Rating: 4 stars

The Malibu comes in pretty solid, all 5 stars except for the rollover teat.

2010 Toyota Camry

NHTSA Ratings
Passenger: 5 stars
Driver: 5 stars
Side Impact Front: 5 stars
Side Impact Rear: 5 stars
Rollover Rating: 4 stars

The Camry gets the NHTSA's highest rating on everything except Rollover, n which it received the 2nd best rating.

2010 Honda Accord

NHTSA Ratings
Passenger: 5 stars
Driver: 5 stars
Side Impact Front: 5 stars
Side Impact Rear: 3 stars
Rollover Rating: 5 stars

The Accord gets a top rating for every category except for an 'average' rating on side rear impact. One other thing about Honda is that all safety features are standard on every Honda regardless on the trim level. You never pay extra for safety. Pretty cool.

2010 Ford Fusion

NHTSA Ratings
Passenger: 4 stars
Driver: 4 stars
Side Impact Front: 5 stars
Side Impact Rear: 4 stars
Rollover Rating: 4 stars

As you can see, the Fusion gets the 2nd best rating in all categories except the front side impact where it receives the highest rating.

2010 Nissan Altima

NHTSA Ratings
Passenger: 5 stars
Driver: 5 stars
Side Impact Front: Not Tested
Side Impact Rear: Not Tested
Rollover Rating: 4 stars

The Altima, as of this writing, has not been fully tested.

Safety is definetly important when you are choosing which car to purchase. Most of the basic features are standard now-a-days, but make sure you check. The only company I know of that doesn't charge extra or consider safety an option, is Honda.

Don't all cars have to have air bags now? I went to buy a car the other day and the guy said that the airbags were only on a certain packages. I didn't buy that and let. Is this true?

Is it me or do cars seem less safe? I know I know they have all these airbags and safety features, but they seem to be made weak. They used to have all that steel. I now its stupid to say but it just seems that way to me
