A Sedan May Not Be Big Enough, So Which Is The Best Gas Mileage SUV?

They were all the rage as recently as 2-3 years ago: the SUV. Sports Utility Vehicles. Big and spacious, they made people feel safe on th road, even if you really didn't need one. The problem is most of them were terrible on fuel efficiency. The truck kind of morphed into the SUV when auto companies found out that soccer Moms, who were too cool for Mini-Vans, started buying these things up by the 1000's. Then came the $5 gallon of gas and people started looking a little bit closer at what they were driving. The result: the SUV has its first slump in sales...ever.

Fast forward and gas prices are in that $3 range, many people really need the space and need to drive these vehicles. So here is a list of the SUV's out there that have the best MPG rating as rated by the EPA.

You want to know the reason why diesels haven't caught on in North America? One word - sulfur. We have too much sulfur in the diesel here in the US. This cheap grade of diesel fuel will run havoc on the more sophisticated diesels offered overseas and cause an increase in emissions.

Dude, there are a bunch of diesels in Europe that offer better acceleration than their gasoline counter parts. BMW's 120d has 163bhp, goes 0 - 60 in under 8 seconds, and achieves 49.6 miles per gallon. BRING DIESEL TO THE US!!!!!

Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar, Volkswagon, Ford, and many other manufacturers are offering diesels to many markets throughout the world. To put it simple, forget everything you know or think you know about diesel engines you remember a s kid. They are way different now.

Benz and Volkwagon offered diesel vehicles in the United States, with each generation becoming cleaner, smoother, and more powerful than the last. Diesels today are nothing like the old ones

Volkswagon offered diesel as well, although they had a habit for spewing blue smoke from the tail pipe. It was nasty and people hated it. They would be making more of these if people bought them, trust me

Mercedes Benz had better luck in the 1980s with a bunch of vehicles available with diesel engines. They offered amazing durability although they were rough, noisy, and smoked quite a bit. It turned people off

In 1980, GM modified their 350ci gas V8 to run on diesel fuel. The result [beep] ed. These engines offered better fuel economy but little else. They were very slow, and not very reliable. Loud too
